Moon Rings
A downloadable game
The cursed Blood Moon hangs over this land always.
You are a witch and cannot abide its reign any longer. You have used your magicks to find a hidden labyrinth, said to hide rings which contain power to control the moon.
A last resort to change your home.
As you step foot into the labyrinth, the Blood Moon speaks,
“Turn back, witch! Everything will be taken from you!”
What is this?
Moon Rings is a solo journaling game based on the Carta and Aspire SRDs. You are a witch who wishes to end the reign of the cursed Blood Moon. Venture into the labyrinth, find the Moon Rings, and cast the ritual to change the moon! The labyrinth is deadly and the Blood Moon is watching, so you’ll need your strength of will, magick, and good fortune to make it to the end!
Note that this game has references to violence, blood, anxiety, grief, drowning, cults, and needles.
What do I need to play?
In addition to the game rules, you need:
- a standard deck of cards with jokers removed
- 3 12-sided dice
- the character sheet
- a small token to represent your character
- paper
- something to write with
The game length depends on how much time is spent journaling, but can take 1+ hours.
A virtual tabletop can be used in lieu of physical components. https://playingcards.io/ is a great site that handles all components needed to play Moon Rings.
What's included?
The game is a 58-page pdf with amazing illustrations and layout by Tyson Whiting.
Inside are 53 unique encounters to help inspire journal entries for telling your story in the labyrinth.
It is formatted as a landscape 8.5'' x 5.5'' booklet.
Download includes:
- 58-page game pdf (single page and spreads version)
- Character sheet pdf (regular and low ink version)
- Printer Friendly pdf
The printer friendly version can be printed on 15 sheets of paper, front and back. Set to print as a booklet, left binding, and to print on both sides. You may need to rotate the pdf 90 degrees so 2 pages will print on each side of paper. Or your printer may have an "Auto-rotate pages within each sheet" option.

Thank you! That deck of cards looks great as well!
Super cool mechanics, Junk Food Games team!
Thanks so much!
I got one of the community copies yesterday and set to play almost immediately and it was so much fun. A little background: I have a solo game where I play a witch from a cursed family in a modern world and I pull different solo games to play out different events, like exploring a haunted castle or building a new spell and the like. And the Moon Rings sounded perfect for culmination of her efforts to break the curse and I must say it delivered beyound my expectations! I set it up as a dream journey since her main power has to do with what I call dreamwalking. The first ring showed her the vision of hopeful future, and then she had to confront memories of grief, struggle to remember what really drives her, deal with a room full of wonders (which was a very difficult thing for her cause her curiosity tends to lead her to a lot of trouble xD), and memories of pain and hatred which she rejects. Then her luck turns to the worst and the next two rings allude her and she even loses a finger before getting a match on her very last chance (which questions her worthiness, ouch). She lost like 10 Blood backtracking to the ritual room too, where she finally healed the entity from which the curse originated (represented by the Blood Moon). I really love how deep and personal the answers to some of the prompts felt, and the descriptions were very evocative. It really felt both like a dream journey and an epic quest
I love this! Thanks for playing and sharing your experience!
This was so much fun to play. I like your take on the Carta system and how you turned it into a labyrinth. The mechanics intertwined with the lines for the spell was nicely done too. Your prompts are very spooky and this is a game that would really creep me out if I played it at night. Well done!
Thanks so much!
Oh wow, everything about this is SO stylish! You can really feel the vibe from the very opening of the game and you managed to streamline certain aspects of Carta in ways I haven't seen widely done (or at all). You put something truly truly special!
Thank you so much!!
This is quite gorgeous. Are there plans for a print run?
Thank you!
Yes, we do plan to a print run for this. I'll likely make a post and update the itch page with links when that becomes available.
